Exercise daily, exercise three times a week. Drink juice, fruit juice is sugar. Ummm, WTF?! The “expert” recommendations are often conflicting and confusing.

Let’s check out the natural fab 5!

natural medicine, plant based health, chia seeds, ACV, CBD, raw honey, coconut oil
CBD fluid, raw honey, coconut oil, chia seeds, and apple cider vinegar are quick and painless additions to your natural plant based medicine cabinet!

I will go through why you need each of the fab 5 in your healthy arsenal but first let’s introduce them! Have you have heard of apple cider vinegar, chia seeds, local honey, coconut oil, and CBD fluid? Each item provides different health benefits and has various uses so we should check them out!

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can be very useful around the house and in your body. Look for the type with the “Mother” in it. Mother strands are simply colonies of beneficial bacteria. ACV has been proven to lower blood sugar. Lower blood sugar has numerous health benefits in itself but it can also improve insulin sensitivity so that your body utilizes insulin better! When you maintain a healthy blood sugar level it can also help with weight loss. Super great! ACV has also been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and prevent infections. You can also use it in cooking and as a disinfectant for small cuts, scrapes, and even possibly acne! There are various ways to ingest ACV, some just do a one ounce shot before eating, others prefer to mix it with some water first. It just comes down to personal preference.

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are magic little gems that can have a couple of great effects when added to your diet regularly. They bring additional fiber, protein, calcium, omega-3s, and antioxidants to your body. Just one tablespoon can easily be sprinkled into soups, smoothies, yogurt, or even just added to your drink! Chia seeds expand and become gelatinous in liquids. This helps them create a feeling of fullness which can help you control your intake. The extra fiber and gelatinous coating can have a benefit in the bathroom too.

Natural Local Raw Honey

Natural honey has a long history of a lot of health benefits. However, the processed stuff that we buy in the stores usually has all the nutrients processed out of it. Nowadays local raw honey can be found at just about any farmer’s market or local specialty shop. Local raw honey has so many micronutrients in it. Including folate, several other B vitamins, copper, calcium, iodine, selenium, potassium, some zinc, sodium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, and manganese. There are antioxidants and phytonutrients present that aren’t in processed honey.

Many believe that local honey helps reduce seasonal allergy symptoms. It can also aid with digestion, be used as a burn salve, and makes a great cough suppressant! With so many uses for this health food phenom feel free to search for recipes specifically for the use you are looking for. *Remember to never give any honey products to children until 12 months of age.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is another health food power house with more uses and benefits than you can shake a stick at. You can use coconut oil in cooking and it tastes delicious. It has been shown to improve your good cholesterol numbers too. Use it sparingly though as you would any other oils for cooking.

Coconut oil is also great for your hair, moisturizing and helping it grow long and lush. It is able to penetrate the hair shaft to protect and prevent drying out. Coconut oil can be applied to the hair like a mask and allowed to soak before showering. You can massage it into the scalp regularly to help with dandruff too.

Coconut oil can also be used topically for a variety of skin conditions. It contains high amounts of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Coconut oil can be very helpful in reducing eczema and psoriasis symptoms. It is beneficial for wound healing, as a skin moisturizer, and can provide relief from burns as well.

Whole Flower CBD Fluid

CBD is the hot new acronym right now. However, it is actually based on centuries of knowledge from the herbal and natural communities. CBD or cannabidiol is the component responsible for the majority of health benefits from medical marijuana. Only without the accompanying high. Although CBD usually carries with it a trace amount of THC, the part that is psychoactive. Full spectrum CBD fluid contains less than 0.3% of THC. This minimal amount helps provide the entourage effect for the rest of the beneficial components. It isn’t enough to register as psychoactive in the brain or as a positive on a drug screening.

CBD has been shown in numerous clinical studies to have benefits for anxiety, depression, and insomnia. It can also boost the immune system, improve digestion, and reduce chronic inflammation. Thousands of people depend on CBD every day to stop migraines, and seizures in their tracks. CBD has been claimed to reduce inflammation including allergic reactions, chronic pain, and inflammatory skin conditions. Whole flower water soluble CBD fluid can be a great addition to your daily routine or a wonderful supplement when needed.

We Took Away Our Daughter’s iPad – what we learned

Does your child spend a lot time on their iPad? I bet they do, ours did too. We had one major rule though and that was, “don’t talk to anyone you don’t know in real life online.” Our daughter broke that rule and we took it away. What we didn’t expect were the changes we would observe over the next few weeks.

What did you just minimize?

Our daughter, like most kids her age, enjoyed playing games where her friends could interact with her online. She knew that she wasn’t supposed to talk to anyone that she didn’t know in real life. One day though her dad walked into her room and she quickly minimized something. Ummmm what did you just minimize? “Nothing”, she said. Of course her dad took the computer and found a benign conversation that our daughter admitted she didn’t know the person she was talking to. We reacted quickly and strongly because pedos don’t just start the conversation saying “hey little girl I have some bad intentions for you.”. So we needed to make our point. Computer and iPad were gone for an indefinite amount of time.

How long are we going to keep them?

Over the next few days my husband and I went back and forth about how long we were going to keep her devices. We didn’t really have a plan in place since this was kind of unexpected. After a couple days though we noticed that she hadn’t asked for it, at all, not once. So we determined that we wouldn’t do anything if she didn’t ask. Let’s just see how long we can go here.

She started playing with her little brother and sister again.

After a while we started to notice that our daughter was interacting with her younger siblings again. Especially her little sister. They started playing board games, going out on the trampoline, and other imaginative play. She still hadn’t asked for her iPad back so we were letting it go. We were noticing a lot fewer fights, a lot less yelling, and a happier daughter.

Her behavior improved.

After a couple weeks, we noticed that our mornings started to go more smoothly. She was now waking up before she needed to and getting ready without being told. I asked her if after we went to bed was she was going back on her computer before. She admitted she often did. Her mood was improving, she was more engaged with us and started asking her siblings to go outside WAY more often!

Three weeks later.

She still hasn’t asked for the iPad back and we haven’t offered it to her. Things have definitely improved around here and we are pleasantly surprised. Obviously we didn’t anticipate these changes, we hadn’t realized how much constantly being on her iPad was affecting her. Not only affecting her but the rest of us. It seems as though we are all a little happier without that iPad around.

CBD – My Experience with Depression

Have you heard of CBD fluid? Unless you have been living under a rock then you probably have, but what is it, what is it for, and why should you try it? I can’t promise to have all the answers to those questions or others you might have. However, I will go through how I came to try CBD fluid and what I discovered when I did.

Depression runs in the family.

I have had issues with depression on an off throughout most of my adult life. My father suffered with a major depressive disorder, although his went unacknowledged and untreated except for with Twinkies. Postpartum, seasonal affective disorder, and why do people just suck depressions have hit me at various times in my life. I would usually self medicate with food until I took up running. Which I fell in love with the feeling of running every day.

I had been having some pretty unpleasant health issues for a little over a year. It started with one seemingly insignificant cold and then snowballed into a roaring avalanche of shit beyond my control. Without going into too much detail, these issues replaced my daily outdoor runs with prescription medications and sadness. I was depressed, gaining weight in a way that felt like it was normal to wake up and weigh more than yesterday. After a while I was able to get off the medications. My healthy and active lifestyle were waiting for my triumphant return. Yet I was still not myself and I couldn’t figure out how to get back to her again. I hated looking in the mirror, hated getting dressed. I just wanted to go back to bed.

I quit my full time job. I took a position that was significantly less stressful but the financial toll was another depressing hurdle to overcome.  Even though I reduced my stress level I still felt stuck. I would lay awake at night wondering what I should do? Did I even have the strength to do what needed to be done? I just couldn’t seem to get out of my own way. I hated myself for letting this happen.

Then a friend mentioned she had tried CBD fluid for her migraines and she swore it was a miracle worker.

I have always been a believer in plant based medicine. I have witnessed too many accounts of natural treatments often being not only more effective but with a million less side effects. So I was curious, could CBD help me with my depression? I clicked on the link she sent me. To be honest I was a little concerned about the price at first but figured it was worth a shot because I didn’t want any more prescription pills. So I put a bottle in my cart and hit checkout, $110 later I received the email confirmation that my order was submitted.

Here we go.

I was so excited when it arrived! I opened up the box and saw this tiny little bottle. Well my little miracle worker, show me what you’ve got. Just two drops under the tongue, hmmm, that doesn’t seem like much but ok. Oh My God is tastes like I am drinking hemp! WOW that was a strong flavor, I should have had water ready to drink! Washed it down and then thought to myself, “I don’t feel anything”. To be honest I am not sure what I expected to feel instantly. I guess I thought it would be like taking a hit off a bong. It wasn’t at all. I literally felt nothing. The rational side of me then realized that it would take time. Like every other medication I have ever needed, the results aren’t usually instant. So I kept doing it.

Four weeks later.

Suddenly it dawned on me that I was sleeping like a rock, every damn night. My dreams were returning. Side note: I am a strong Empath and my dreams have always been a guide for me, when depression hits I struggle with insomnia and they disappear. Now that I was getting better sleep I felt more rested during the day, more energetic and focused. I felt like running again. I want to purge my house all Marie Kondo style, I will update you on that project in another post. CBD fluid has given me my life back. I no longer feel depressed or like I am helpless in my situation. I feel like me again. I am so thankful for CBD. My friend was right, it is a miracle worker.

How to Get Your Baby to Sleep like a Baby

Congratulations on your new baby! Such a sweet little bundle of joy, it’s just heavenly isn’t it? At first any whimper will make you leap right out of bed in the middle of the night to attend to every need. In a few weeks though, you’re frigging tired. You need this little sweet pea to sleep on some kind of consistent basis so you can function. Let’s face it, coffee ain’t cutting it. The whole “sleep when the baby sleeps”, is crap. Especially if you have other kids, or a husband, or a job, etc. You feel like a zombie and need some sleep, like yesterday. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

Side note: this is not to be used in place of solid medical advice from your child’s pediatrician based off your child’s specific health needs or medical conditions.

I was Tired Once too

I am no sleep expert but I am the mother of five beautiful children, four of whom all slept through the night by 10 weeks old. This includes a set of twins, which happened to be the last pregnancy. Don’t get me started, thats a story for another time.

Notice how only four of my five slept through the night early on? Well its simple as to why, my first didn’t sleep well at all. In fact, she didn’t sleep through the night until she was about six months old, maybe a year. I can’t remember, it was a blur. Like many older siblings, she is the reason for the following sleep routine plan. I was not going to go sleepless for that long ever again. So from my second child on I started doing this routine at the suggestion of a more experienced mother. Thank God for her because it works!

For the first month or so every baby slept on my chest. I slept sitting up in a recliner or propped up on the couch. These snuggles are not only the sweetest moments that you will every have canoodling with that little angel, but remember how they were JUST inside your warm, safe, quiet, womb? They do and the outside world can be a pretty big adjustment. Ever step out of a sauna into a room that is 30 degrees cooler? It won’t take long before you need to warm up. Plus by sleeping on your chest, your baby can smell you, hear you breathe, maybe even faintly hear your heartbeat. Whether you breastfeed or bottle feed, this sleeping situation will help your baby feel safe while transitioning to the outside world. Which will help YOU get some sleep.

Set a Nightly Routine

Consistency is key, vital in fact, for this part of the routine in order for it to work.

Start wherever you are but begin to establish a nightly routine. If you are consistently getting two hours of sleep out of the baby from 11pm to 1am. Start there. Every night at the same time, without fail, you need to make the following happen. Give the baby a nice warm bath. Don’t forget that they just came out of a nine month warm soak! This will be relaxing for the baby.  Give baby a little rub down to keep their skin soft. I think I used a bedtime lavender infused lotion but you can use any type of moisturizing lotion or cream after the bath. Next get baby all snuggled up in their jammies, swaddle them  and feed them. Whether it is bottle or breast doesn’t matter. Let them get a full belly. Think about it, wouldn’t you be sleepy after all that?

Now once baby begins to nod off, put them in their crib with whatever type of sleep aids, room darkening curtains, etc., you plan on using consistently to help them stay asleep. I had a small fan that provided white noise but wasn’t pointed at the baby.

Set the Tone for the Night

Once baby has nodded off into Sleepyville, then no more bright lights, no more loud voices in the nursery. Everything is about sleep from here until morning. Baby needs to eat again? No worries, feed them, burp them, and then back to the crib. Low/no lights, low voices, with little to no talking, all business. I only changed poop-y diapers at night, just wet waited until morning. As your baby gets older and grows then it will also be able to sleep longer, so now you have established a nighttime routine that leads to them in their cribs. As their length of sleep progresses, then so will yours!

Need to Change the Bedtime Start Time?

Once you get this going consistently for at least a week or two then you can gradually start moving bedtime forward by 30 minutes. 11pm was super late for us so we kept inching the ritual forward until we hit the bedtime that worked for us. Once the pattern is established and your baby knows what to expect, then you will have more control or the bedtime itself. As they start sleeping longer it will be easier too. First the routine is about establishing the ritual so the baby knows what to expect then you can play with the timing.

Deep breath and relax! You got this whole parenting thing!

Reiki – My First Experience

Chances are you have heard of Reiki, but do you really know what it is? Have you ever tried Reiki? Well I decided to give it a shot after seeing a post about a group session online. It read “Refocus, Recharge, and Refresh”, ummm yes please, I definitely need that!!

I attended a Women’s Spiritual Summit the week before that had taught me so much about myself and the healing power of energy. I felt compelled to learn more!

At the summit the week before we learned about the different Chakras, the areas of your body and your life that they represent and influence. We also did some meditation, a few freeing exercises that allowed us to free ourselves from negative memories or burdens, among other empowering activities. We all left feeling lighter and enlightened, so when I saw the invitation to a Reiki session I figured, “why not!?”. I felt like I had just jumped on the spiritual train, heading east!

To be bluntly honest, I had NO idea what it was or what to expect. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

I really had no idea what I was going to experience or any clue on even what to expect. Also, I would imagine that every Reiki experience itself is different, as is every Reiki master so don’t expect your first time to be just like mine.

When we all arrived, we were seated on yoga mats lined up along the floor. There were several candles all around the space, and we did some general introductions like you would anticipate in any group session. Then we were told to lay down on our mats. I wish I had brought a pillow, you’re welcome for that piece of information.

I laid down on my back and the instructors turned off the lights. It was almost solely candlelight now. Calming music was put on softly, we were instructed to calm our minds, listen to our bodies if we needed to change positions, and to just quietly, peacefully, thoughtfully relax our minds and bodies.

My Mind Wouldn’t Shut Up

If you know me at all then you know that my mind (and mouth) are almost always moving. Crazy thing was that it wasn’t the usual endless chatter that my mind produces and my mouth obediently spits out into the world. This was a different kind of chatter. It was a reflective type of chatter. I reviewed recent events, mindset shifts, and trying moments that had occurred in the past months. Things that had led me to now be lying on my back in a dark gym with nine other people wondering how the hell we got so far off track. Although my mind never stopped talking, she processed a lot of things during this reflective quiet. The meditation had taken away all the external influences that normally bombard her and she was able to truly reflect on how we came to be at this place in my life.

I Felt My Body Open Up

When I first laid down on the mat I had to put my knees up because it was killing my back. After several minutes of quiet meditation though I felt guided to straighten out my legs. I imagined roots extending from my feet pulling me firmly into the ground. Remember I have never done anything like this before so I was just following what felt right and guess what, my back didn’t hurt at all. Slowly, I felt my body becoming lighter, less tense, and less stressed. I began to relax in my hands, my feet, my face. I began to think of the things I wanted to invite into my life. The healing I wanted for my body and my mind began to seem more clear, intentional, and possible.

Enter the Reiki Master

I was laying there for quite some time and felt quite relaxed but I was wondering when it was actually going to start. I was in the middle of the room so I didn’t realize that they actually had started already. The Reiki masters went one by one to each person as they lay on the floor in their meditative states. Silently working with each of them. I didn’t know that was happening until they arrived at the people next to me.

Now it was my turn.

The Reiki master positioned herself at the top of my head. She placed her hands on my crown. I could feel the warmth of her touch but I didn’t feel anything in particular at that moment. She then worked through each chakra area applying the energy to each. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to be feeling something. Then one chakra in particular gave me a very distinct response, it made me think very direct thoughts about the influence and power that chakra possessed. Its instruction was all very clear when she touched it. I had no doubt what it wanted me to know.

Post Reiki Vibrations

Given the little bit of knowledge I had gained the week before I already knew which chakras were my problem areas and which were more aligned. What I became aware of after the Reiki master moved away from me was that I felt and even “saw” vibrational planes (think rings of Saturn) surrounding my strongest chakras. It was an experience difficult to describe.

We were then told to start wiggling our fingers and toes to bring ourselves back to the present. I opened my eyes and felt very relaxed. I hadn’t realized just how deep in meditation I had become, since my mind was constantly churning until it came time to awaken.

Curious?

Everyone’s experience, and I imagine every session is different. As other’s in the group reflected on the experiences they had just felt, no two were the same. I walked away with a calm peaceful feeling and slept like a rock that night. If you are curious at all about trying Reiki then I highly recommend you give it a chance. If nothing else you get an hour of peaceful reflection, but I’m pretty sure that you will get more than that out of it.

How to Make a Legit New Year Resolution

Happy New Year! New Year, new you? Is that your resolution? Every New Year millions of people make vague and half hearted promises to themselves that often don’t last through January. It has been said that a goal without a plan is just a wish, so how do you make a resolution that you can actually follow through with? I have 5 simple steps to nailing a legit resolution down and making it happen!

What do you really want? Like REALLY want!

Step one is crucial to making a New Year resolution that is going to stick! What do you want? It shouldn’t be a vague, “I want to get healthier.”, “I want to make more money.”, or one that requires another person to be involved, “I want to get married.”. You have no control over other people. Those vague resolutions are just half hearted promises to yourself that you have no real intention of keeping. Come on man, you deserve better than that! The whole point of making a New Year’s resolution is that you are making a promise to yourself that you are going to commit to and make happen. So, I will ask you again, what do you want? Be specific in your goal.

What do you need to do to make it happen?

Step two is laying out the plan necessary to make your goal happen! If your goal is big then you will need to map out the steps you need to at least get started. Did you make a resolution to get healthier? You need to decide how you plan on doing it. If you plan on increasing your activity level then what does that mean? Are you going to go to the gym three times a week? Are you going to walk 10 minutes a day? You will need to be specific but also be realistic. Don’t commit to going to the gym at 5am every morning if you know that you are up until midnight every night. You may be able to get there eventually but what you need now are baby steps. You need to pick a reasonable action that will help you set your plan into motion.

Remember, a goal without a plan is just a wish.

When do you start?

Step three is the one that knocks the commitment phobe out of their comfort zone! Now you will need to set a date and keep it! This is the date that you start moving forward with your action plan to make your goal come true. This is not a random or arbitrary date. This is not written in pencil in your day planner. This is your commitment to your goal and keeping your promise to yourself date. If you don’t keep this date then you are only letting yourself down. Pick a date and start.

Do it for 3 weeks, minimum.

Step four is the meat and potatoes of it all. It has been said that it takes three weeks to make or break a habit. You have mapped out your plan, set your date, and moved forward with making it happen. Giving up before three weeks time is a disservice to you and seriously, you deserve so much better than that. You KNOW what you want, you said so in step one! It’s not going to happen without YOU! You started this now keep it going!

Reevaluate and adjust!

Step five is awesome because you made it this far! You’ve made a promise to yourself and kept it for three weeks. How is it going? If you find that you need to tweak things and make adjustments then now is the time. Be proud of yourself, making a big change isn’t easy and depending on your goal it may have been way out of your comfort zone. Congrats on doing something just for you and following through with it. You deserve it!
